Would a stop in AI advances be a good thing? That’s the question I had to ask myself before I even began to read “Experts Concerned That AI Progress Could Be Speeding Toward a Sudden Wall.” Actually, the question came later.
My actual first thought wasn’t even a question. The first thought that popped into my head was this… if the progress stopped right now for a period of time, it might actually be a benefit. Innovation is not a bottleneck right now; adoption and implementation are. We already can’t keep up with the pace of change. We, those of us trying to implement this stuff, might benefit from a breather.
We Don’t Need More AI Advances To See Huge Benefits
Personally, I’m probably ahead of most, and I haven’t begun to touch the surface of the power that’s available if the only thing we ever got was what we have now. The article wasn’t talking about people like me, however. The article discussed the potential for a market crash. Of course, that is a risk if AI hits a real wall, mainly because markets can overreact when expectations outpace reality. I’d also argue, however, that those expectations may already be ahead of reality.
Most teams don’t struggle because the frontier models aren’t capable enough. They struggle because shipping AI safely into real-world workflows is harder than the AI overlords may want us to believe.
A simple example: If all AI ever amounted to was an amazing research assistant, I’d personally be very happy. And yes, I realize I could have shaved and perhaps straightened my collar. 😉
AI Advances Aren’t The Bottleneck. Implementation Is.
Some pretty good surveys of AI adoption and implementation support this. In their survey published on 10 November 2025, EY reported that “nearly nine out of 10 employees now use AI at work, yet only 28% of organizations are positioned to turn AI deployment into high-value outcomes.”
The problem is not that AI can’t do enough, but that most organizations can’t absorb the pace of change fast enough to turn capability into dependable, accountable work. “When new technology lands on fragile talent foundations – weak culture, insufficient learning, misaligned rewards – productivity benefits lag by over 40%.”
And later in November, Brookings released a consumer survey, How are Americans using AI? Evidence from a nationwide survey. It shows the same pattern seen inside companies: people are comfortable using AI informally, but far fewer use it in meaningful work. That gap between casual use and professional deployment mirrors corporate adoption, where experimentation is common but deep integration into core workflows remains slow and uneven.
Personally… the constant change, the constant unrelenting advance, has my head spinning. I know I’m not alone. Everyone I talk to feels the same. I think teams need stability more than novelty. Stability would let them build manageable, repeatable systems, properly train staff, and stop treating every AI deployment like a 6th-grade science fair.
Seriously, I wake up most days wondering what crazy new advance is going to disrupt an apple cart I kind of enjoy getting my apples from. That’s not sustainable. And the pressure that I witness some getting from their leadership to move faster toward AI adoption? That’s probably not sustainable either. I can hear the concern in their voices, even when their words sound positive.
I Don’t Need Or Want This To Hit A Wall. I Just Need A Breather.
What would that look like? It would look like a steady platform, not a stall caused by disappointment or budget cuts. It would look like engineers and managers who could finish projects because targets would stop moving. It would look like proper evaluation, safety monitoring, governance, data cleanup, permissioning, cost controls, and workflow redesign that make AI useful, rather than just flashy.
Recently, I created a video about how to approach AI for a large organization. It will be played on stage at their brand conference next week. In it, I said, “The bleeding edge is not where you want to play. Leading edge looks different. You pay attention. You test. You look for clear, practical wins that solve real problems. You pilot things in a controlled way. You measure what happens. You expand only when it is proven that the change benefits the people you serve and those who run the business.”
We have too many leaders running around looking for a way to make sure AI ends up making them look cool in a slide deck. When change is happening this fast, that could end up being a very expensive slide.
A Hard Stop Could Hurt Adoption
Of course, there is another side. There always is. These rapid AI advances don’t just create new features. Often, they also fix the things that block adoption: reliability, latency, cost, tool use, and guardrails. A real “wall” could trigger a panic that freezes budgets and kills projects. That might hurt operators more, because it could remove the runway needed to build the boring stuff, the infrastructure.
Anyone can easily get to the simple stuff, vibe coding landing pages and simple apps, prompting content creation at scale… text, graphics, and video. But the real wins come when exciting AI advances are combined with boring infrastructure work intelligently. We certainly don’t want that to stop.
Slow the AI Advances Ourselves And Raise The Bar
Operational teams should want fewer releases, clearer guidelines, and better backward compatibility, but they probably shouldn’t want progress to stop. I think we need an “operator-first AI,” where quality, predictability, and integration matter more than headline benchmarks.
So why don’t we commit to creating our own breathing room? Why not just freeze one model in production for a fixed window, like a quarter, and run upgrades only through a gated evaluation with rollback if things go sideways? Why not keep a sandbox for experimentation while production runs on a release cycle that makes sense and isn’t tied to dramatic, unpredictable external influences?
AI releases shouldn’t be driving our decision-making. They should be informing our decision-making. I may not be the right guy to define the success metrics, but I think these are the right questions.
The Next Advance Is Operational, Not Magical
The ultimate winners will not be the organizations and teams that chase every new model as it is released. The winners will be the deliberate product managers who build systems that make AI dependable, measurable, and boring in production.
Boring is what scales.
