On Copy And Paste And The Things We Take For Granted

March 9, 2026 By Jeff Turner Leave a Comment

It’s 2026, and “copy and paste” is part of our vernacular.

Twenty years ago, in May of 2006, that was not the case. That’s the month we updated the Real Estate Shows website to include the FAQ, “How do I copy and paste the link to my Real Estate Shows?” That link will take you to the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. It was a trip down memory lane for me since Real Estate Shows closed last year. It was a good 23-year run.

I was reminded of this tutorial a couple of weeks ago on a customer success call with one of our Tangilla clients. I forget what the context was, but it reminded me how easy it is to mistake familiarity with common knowledge.

Sometimes the things we think are simple aren’t simple to our clients.

In 2006, “How do I copy and paste the link to my Real Estate Shows?” was a commonly asked customer support question. Looking back, the tutorial feels silly. Frankly, it felt silly then to all of us at Real Estate Shows. We could easily have minimized it.

But I also remember how appreciative our clients were at the time. It respected their question. It respected their journey through a changing technology landscape.

I need to remember NOT to downplay simple questions like that today.

Everyone starts at the beginning.

The Copy And Paste Tutorial

I wanted to preserve that tutorial so I didn’t have to rely on the Internet Archive. So I copied and pasted that original code (with a bit of editing) from the Wayback Machine. I hope it makes you smile.

How to Copy and Paste

Take your mouse and place your cursor at the beginning of the text in box 1 below, then click and hold the left mouse button while pulling your mouse over the text to highlight it. Release the mouse button. With the cursor over the highlighted text, right-click and select Copy. Click in box 2, right-click again, and select Paste.

2.

Cut and paste works the same way — just choose Cut instead of Copy.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Highlight All: Ctrl + A
Copy: Ctrl + C  (Mac: ⌘ + C)
Paste: Ctrl + V  (Mac: ⌘ + V)

The ability to cut, copy, and paste is found in most programs. Even if right-click is disabled, the keyboard shortcuts above will still work.
