A QR Code Art Exhibit?

July 12, 2011 By Jeff Turner 7 Comments

I’ve always dreamt of having my photos included in an art gallery exhibit. The idea of mingling with art lovers as they looked at the images on the gallery wall, has always been a fantasy. I can assure you that I never once dreamed it might look like this.

A good friend and former employee, Steven Lee Stinnett, has organized a “one night only” event at the Pøst Gallery in Los Angeles that he’s billing as a QR tag art show. Sponsored by Spanglish For Gringos, the show will feature a number of artists, all displaying their creations via their smart phones. (By the way, in my fantasy, the art lovers mingled with cocktails in hand, not smart phones… just sayin.)

I’ve been a critic of how QR codes have been used. And I know some people may think this is an abomination, but I actually think it’s an interesting idea, if not a social commentary. If you’d like to experience it first hand, wander over to Pøst  at 1904 East 7th Place in Los Angeles on Wednesday, July 13 from 7pm to 9pm. DJ Tomás will be spinning the tunes and food will be catered by Border Grill.

Just remember to bring your smart phone.

When I was a kid, I always thought that in the post apocolyptic world, the government would start tagging humans with barcodes for tracking purposes (yes I watched lot of sci-fi as a kid). I guess I was wrong. We humans felt the need to preemptively mark ourselves with QR codes (see: #fail). I for one am not marking myself just yet.

Mate, I so wish I could be there to see this. I’m sure I’d get a buzz out of seeing what you’ve done. I’d probably also get a buzz from heckling you. 🙂

But seriously. You know I am a massive fan of your photos and I’d LOVE to see someone run them as a gallery exhibit. They are World Class! Perhaps we could work on that together to do a gallery style event as a fund raiser for MFFO? I’m very very serious!

I’m with Peter. Who wouldn’t want a signed, framed Turner original hanging on their wall?

I’m just ready for my bar code (and hoping someone blows us away with a clever use of these)
