We Can’t Control The Moment

March 10, 2011 By Jeff Turner 6 Comments

Being in the moment is not about control. It’s about giving up control.

One of my dearest friends, Ines Hegedus-Garcia, left this comment on my Lessons From A Miraculous Sunrise post. She said, “Sometimes what we think are distractions are actually growth possibilities and there’s a reason those are placed in your way. I prefer not to choose and let it all in as it comes my way… life is not always about control.”

As always, she got me thinking. Was I really trying to take control? I thought about this a long time. My goal was to be in the moment. Not to control the moment. Doing that requires letting go of the things we “think” we have control over – the past, the future, and people, places and things that have nothing to do with that moment. It also means not letting other things have control either, like the constant interruption of technology.

To be fully present, we have to let go of the things that distract us from enjoying the moment we’re in, and that includes the desire to control that moment and all of the moments outside of it.

It’s not about control. It’s about losing control.

Control is an interesting word to analyze, which this post lead me to do. If I reflect on the events that have made me the most unhappy in life (a very rare occurrence-I’m usually smiling), control is fixated as one of the constants.

Whether imposed by others or ourselves, it almost instantly produces a negative result. Interesting…
