Enabling User Generated Photo Galleries – SlideChute

Add User-Generated Photos to Your Site

This post is a test a new service/tool from the mind of Gregarious Narin and his team. It is called, SlideChute. The concept behind this tool, still in beta, is simple… it enables users in a community to upload photos to be included on a page or a post. It seems like a perfect thing for event sites like RETSO, or for event pages on any site. In addition to enabling the direct upload by users on a post or page like this, a “Subscriptions” option allows you to automatically import photos from various social services into your Chute via hashtag monitoring. Right now the subscriptions option includes Instagram and Twitter, with Foursquare integration coming soon. And each Chute has it’s own page as well.

You can choose to moderate or not moderate the uploaded photos. Photos will obey your moderation settings no matter where you import them from. Installation on this site took all of 60 seconds to copy the two scripts required. The first script inserts the upload button. This would not have to be on this page, but for demo purposes, it is. Give it a try by clicking the upload button below.
Your photos will appear below after I approve them. The moderation process takes place inside your account at SlideChute. Here is how the default player performs.

Congrats, Gregarious. Both SlideChute and the Chute backend platform, which allows app developers to incorporate photo sharing into their apps, look like winners to me. Give it a try above and let me know your thoughts.

Edge Cases, Link Bait And Herdsourcing! Oh, My!

We Give Too Much Authority To Social Media Edge Cases. This is not to say that edge cases should not be given their rightful attention or respect. They most certainly should. Edge cases teach us where the boundaries are. They help push us. They help stretch our thinking. But there is danger when the edge…

Should You Buy The New Lytro Camera? Probably Not.

I’m A Sucker For New Technology. Playing with a new gizmo brings me an incredible level of joy. This is true even if the technology proves itself not quiet ready for prime time. So I ordered the revolutionary Lytro, the first consumer focused plenoptic camera, also known as a light-field camera, without a single moment…

Are You A Victim Of Social Media Peer Pressure?

The power of peer expectations. Last week I deleted the Foursquare app from my phone… again. I had deleted it once before, only to installing it one more time for a conference I was attending. It’s a simple way to find out where your friends are. And that’s true. It’s simple. But so is sending…

Is Zillow’s Pinterest Use Copyright Infringement?

Yes, I have a bug up my butt about Pinterest and copyright. Sorry. We all have our issues. This one is mine right now. I really do try to ignore it, but I’m attracted to it like a moth to flame. Or maybe it’s the other way around. Yesterday, I was minding my own business…

Has Google Lapsed Into Newtonian Thinking?

“The Google I was passionate about was a technology company that empowered its employees to innovate. The Google I left was an advertising company with a single corporate-mandated focus,” James Whittaker wrote in Why I Left Google. “The days of old Google hiring smart people and empowering them to invent the future was gone. The…

The Upside And Downside Of Being Videolicious

Videolicious is a dead simple iPhone video production app.  I’ve been “playing” with it for about a month and can now say for certain, there is a place for this app in my content creation toolset. But it has a few limitations. First, let’s look at the upside. It’s ridiculously easy to use. Once you…

Hope For External Inspiration Springs Eternal

Every Apple product launch comes with a large dose of hope to go with the hype.  The New iPad Launched Yesterday. I’ve already ordered mine. I’m not going to go over the insane specs of the new screen or enter the debate about whether it lives up to the hype or not. Much has been written…

What’s Your Twitter Archetwype?

When Dave Cole takes to his whiteboard, good things happen.  On Monday, his whiteboard was filled with thoughts about social-media-powered quadrangles under the concept name of “AuthenTWicity.” Go ahead and laugh. Tuesday they were built into the backend of Dashter’s full profile views and named “Dashter Archetwypes.” You can laugh again, we don’t mind. Since an archetype refers…

Kenya – Recalibrating My Worldview

As he drove us to our appointment in what is known as the “Quarry Slums” Andrew Mnjama spoke passionately about his background in finance, his experience with micro-finance, and his desire to make a difference in the lives of the poorest of the poor in Nairobi’s slums, all the while, effortlessly dodging cars and people…

Sex And Real Estate And The Future Of The Industry

Buying and selling a home is an emotional experience. It’s not about information. It’s not about data. If you’ve ever bought or sold a home, this shouldn’t be a surprise to you. Searching on the Internet for a house may be about information, at first, but the act of actually BUYING the home is not….

House As The Perfect Mother: Sex And Real Estate

We  want to love our houses. It’s hard to question that.  In The House As Beloved, we looked at how we fall in love with houses and how this reality could not be ignored, either by buyer’s agents or seller’s agents. Both have a specific role to play in protecting their clients from the negative…

The House As Beloved: Sex And Real Estate

Your heart is intertwined with your home. “I’m sure that people end up working as Realtors for many different reasons,” Heather Elias wrote, “but for me, the reason I enjoy my job so much is that I know how deeply your heart is intertwined with your home. In the end, buying or selling a home…

Why You’re Not Winning At Social Media

Social media is not hard to understand. Of course, if you read the Wikipedia definition, it makes it seem hard to understand. “Social media is media for social interaction as a super-set beyond social communication. Enabled by ubiquitously accessible and scalable communication techniques, social media has substantially changed the way organizations, communities, and individuals communicate.”…

Chasing The Shiny Now

Everyone loves the shiny new. It’s true for technology, gadgets and software tools for sure. And it’s been equally true of social tools and social networking sites for several years now. Every new site launch gets hyped on Mashable and Techcrunch, every move is scrutinized. We don’t want to miss the opportunity to be in…

Pinterest Is Still Enabling Piracy

In response to cries of copyright abuse, Pinterest announced a “fix” for the copyright concerns. “To thwart any lawsuits in the making, the much talked-about startup is giving disgruntled site-owners a way to stop piracy before it starts by blocking their images from showing up on Pinterest,” Jennifer Van Grove wrote on VentureBeat. The headline?…

Smart Content Strategy And A Good Night’s Sleep

“If your business has a smart content strategy, you never have to worry about what Facebook does. Sleep well.” –  Brian Clark – @copyblogger I think we’d probably all like to sleep well at night. I know I do. And we’d probably like to end each day with the feeling that the actions we took that…

Of Pinterest And The Importance Of Quality Conversations

I’ve been struggling to put into words why I’m not drawn to Pinterest. JWT North America CEO David Eastman, who opened up Social Media Week in New York finally put a voice to what I have been feeling. ”Pinterest – it’s a beautifully laid out visualization of all the stuff we like, but am I the only…

Have You Identified The Soul Of Your Company?

First, you must believe that a soul is necessary. One of the problems of our day is that, all too often, the companies that dominate our headlines are built to be sold. Many are sold before they’re even profitable. And the creators don’t plan to be around long. So growth, even less than profits, becomes…

Pinterest Addiction & The Future Of America

The Latest Social Media Drug I created my Pinterest account on January 21, 2011 and, quite frankly, pinned three items and forgot about it until the recent tsunami of interest flared up. Now it’s become almost impossible for me to escape tweets and status updates that mention Pinterest. Frankly, it’s been a while since I’ve…

Does Authenticity Really Matter?

Does Intent Matter? I have no idea whether Irina was asking the following question relative to the social web or  about life in general, but I’ve thought about this question a great deal in the past and recently as it relates to the use of social media for marketing. “how can you tell if you’re…

What’s Missing From Facebook Archive Files?

“What if Facebook allowed exporting of all content you added and allowed you to take it to WordPress or Posterous etc? How would that change your opinion?” Those questions were asked by Chris Smith as part of the conversation on “Facebook Is Not The Internet, Nor Should It Be.” The question was a part of a…

Tilting At Internet Windmills

We spend too much time attacking imaginary enemies.  This is especially true when it comes to the Internet and technology. Change comes so quickly, we find it difficult not to constantly try to predict it’s next move. And it’s the pace of change that’s driving the bulk of our behavior. It’s further complicated by the…

Facebook Is Not The Internet, Nor Should It Be

I’m going to go ahead and draw a line in the sand.  I love Facebook. I’ve been posting there since April 16, 2007. And I believe Facebook should be insanely profitable, but Facebook is not the internet, nor should it be. Chris Smith suggests this in a long status update on Facebook. “The Facebook I see…

Pinning For Gold

I love early adopters. They’re like the American settlers who came West looking for gold. They ignore the warnings of friends and bravely forge into new territory with the hope of making a better life, all the while risking attack by unfriendly natives. Some find empty streams. Some find gold in those streams. Actually, the…

The Direct Connection Between Values And Success

Your values are your true brand. I believe this without reservation. There is real power in clearly identifying and articulating your core mission and values, and making them a prominent behavior driver, both in your business and in your personal life. Two stories caught my eye this past week and they each take a different approach to…

Drunk On Social Media Attention

“Social Media is a watering hole. You shouldn’t be surprised when the predators arrive.” My good friend, Steven Lee Stinnett, said this to me a few years ago. I wasn’t surprised at the time, and I loved the analogy. Today I’m surprised when the predators AREN’T around. I think the watering hole metaphor still applies, but has…

Kenya Exposed More Than Just My Emotions

I didn’t write a single word while I was in Kenya. I snapped over 3000 photos and videos. I updated Twitter and Facebook and Path in the morning or the evening when I had access. But I did not sit down to write like this at all during my 21 days outside of the United…

Of Netbooks, Kenya And Perspective

“Can I help you?” “Yes,” I said. “I’d like to buy this Gateway netbook” If you know me, that’s not a sentence I thought would ever come out of my mouth. But that’s the whole point of this story. I wasn’t buying it for me, I was buying it for Mary, the first of the…

I’m Going To Kenya To Meet My Daughters

“I’ve found two more daughters.” Those are the words I was greeted with when my wife, Rocky, returned from what we thought was going to be her “once in a lifetime” volunteer trip to Kenya with Global Volunteer Network in October of 2007. She had fallen in love with the girls at St. Monica’s Children’s…

My 2011 Top 25 On Twitter List

One thousand eight hundred fifty one. (1851) That’s exactly how many people had interactions with me on Twitter this past year. How do I know this? On December 3, 2010 at 2:03 PM PST, I set up RowFeeder to capture every mention of @respres. The first mention it captured was from Rachel Rusnak, who tweeted, “@respres…

Curation As Story – The Importance Of Human Filters

Curation is a form of storytelling. Curation tools need to support this truth.  Collecting content without qualitative human judgement is aggregation, not curation. The best automation tools alone will never replace the ability of a human being to provide meaningful context. And the best curation, the curation I subscribe to via email, takes context to…

It’s Your Reputation. Are You RealSatisfied?

Someone Is In Control Of Your Reputation. Is it You? I’ve not been shy about expressing my opinion that real estate brokers should be leading the charge to “raise the bar” in the real estate industry. The responsibility for managing brand and reputation falls squarely on their shoulders. And in the wake of continued talk…

Behavior Is The Truest Form Of Communication

Yesterday, Marc Davison asked a question in the form of a blog post. Who are you? It was a post about corporate values, a topic near to my heart and one I’ve been writing and speaking about for years. I encourage you to read the post. It’s a story about how he experienced corporate values in the behavior of…

Why Do You Exist, Other Than To Make Money

A few of my friends, Teri Conrad, Debra Trappen and Laura Monroe, had been talking about the #brandtribe chat stream on Twitter for a while, so I thought I’d follow along using Dashter to curate a bit of the discussion, and see what I could glean from it this morning. I was happy that the…

Vision, Values, And The Real Estate Industry

The Question from Michael McClure: “Here’s a topic I’ve enjoyed discussing many times with many people: is the “employee” brokerage model viable in real estate, and – on a related point – is there any correlation between the predominance of the independent contractor model and the overall level of professionalism in real estate?” My Response: …

The Siri Effect – Can You Be Found In Voice Activated Search?

Here is a question Robert Wiebusch asked me on Facebook yesterday: “Oh Siri, you have so much to learn. Any experts out there know who Siri’s source is for finding businesses? Wink wink, Jeff Turner…” My answer was short and to the point, “Looks like you’re going to have to up your game on Yelp!…

Why I Deleted My Klout Profile

If you need to look at my Klout score to determine if I have influence, I don’t. If you need to look at my Empire Avenue stock price to determine if I have value, I don’t. And if I have to ask you to vote for me to be on someone’s list of influential people, I…

MeetingBurner – Free Online Meetings & Webinars

Last week I wrote about GoToMeeting vs Google+ Hangouts. And yesterday I curated the #isuckattwitter hashtag stream. Chris Van Dusen may have been paying attention to both. I’m no “expert,” but from my vantage point, Chris does not suck at Twitter and he understands what people are looking for in webinar hosting solutions. Chris Van Dusen –…

You Suck At Twitter If…

In preparing for a demo of Dashter for Chris Smith this morning, I decided to curate the #isuckattwitter hashtag stream that was active for his Inman webinar this morning. Just prior to the webinar, Chris asked his followers to give him some input on what Twitter behaviors really bug them. Chris Smith – @Chris_Smth What…

An Old Meeting Dog Learns New Hangout Tricks

Google+ Hangouts are all the rage today. They are the “new” shiny object in the social media world. For good reason, I think. In concept, they’re certainly not new however. In fact, they’re eerily similar to the Tokbox group video chats of old.  Take a look at this conversation over mojitos that took place in…

Thank you, Steve.

I met Steve Jobs only once. He was coming into Moscone Center to take a walk around the MacWorld floor. Oddly, he was not surrounded by his usual entourage or throngs of people clamoring for his attention. I just happened to be walking out at the time. I don’t usually stop public figures. I live…

An Unscientific Look At The Health Of Google+ vs Facebook

One of my circles on Google+ has 43 people in it.  Last night this circle became my test group for a one day “health” check. Yes, this is a very small, decidedly unscientific sample size. However, I would characterize the people in this specific circle as being very active in the use of social media….

Up For A Game Of Klout?

If you’ve been using your Klout score to tout your online influence, this post is for you. If you’re putting your Klout score on your resume, this post is for you. If you’re a social media guru telling people to go sign up for Klout immediately, this post is for you too. I want to say this as…

Your Facebook Friends Are Not Really Listening

The following tweet caught my eye the other day. Bob (Robert) Watson – @TopBrokerOC Here at #ICSF @imranpoladi says his friends on #Facebook follow the “1-9-90%” trend… 1% comment, 9% Like, 90% are just listening. I wish I could support this. But I can’t. My response was quick, “I like the symmetry of @imranpoladi 1-9-90%…

A QR Code Art Exhibit?

I’ve always dreamt of having my photos included in an art gallery exhibit. The idea of mingling with art lovers as they looked at the images on the gallery wall, has always been a fantasy. I can assure you that I never once dreamed it might look like this. A good friend and former employee,…

OC WordPress Developers Meetup Recap

Here are some brief highlights from tonights OC WordPress Developer meetup hosted at Zeek Interactive. Steve Zehngut – @Zengy FFox user agent plugin mentioned at #ocwp http://bit.ly/qzsShn Loren Nason did the initial presentation of the evening. He talked about his attempts to build a custom mobile theme for a wordpress site. I’m the least of the geeks…

The Positive Power Of Social Media – Dred Scott’s Purple Rain

Every so often, we need to step back and appreciate the power of social media to move masses of people in a positive direction. This video has gone viral, partly because Dred Scott is a talented musician, and partly because it’s a moving story of hope that makes us feel good. It makes me feel…

Is Anyone Listening On LinkedIn?

Conversation rocks. Patricia Harris posed a question this morning in the Tech Support Group For Real Estate Agents: “I heard LinkedIn is surpassing FB as a way of building credibility and hopefully attract followers. What’s your opinion?” My immediate response was, “where did you hear that?” Why? Because what I see happening on LinkedIn would…

Listening As Strategy – Listening To Help

“I am here for you.” When I read Thich Nhat Hahn‘s words on January 3, 2011, it all clicked for me again. For well over a year, I had been struggling to figure out why I wasn’t finding satisfaction in my work. Life was good, but I was going through the motions relative to business….

Listening As Strategy – Listening To Learn

There is what we say. And there is what we mean. The vast majority of the time, what we say and what we’re trying to say are not the same thing. It’s not that we’re attempting to hide something. To the contrary, most of us are trying, to the best of our ability, to insure…

Listening As Strategy – Listening To Reply

We’ve all been on the receiving end of someone listening to reply. Unless, of course, you’ve never listened to a politician answer questions. Our esteemed leaders are expert at listening to reply. Only they don’t call it “listening to reply.” They call it “sticking to their talking points.” A question asked to a politician is…

Listening As Strategy – Listening For Reinforcement

“Still a man hears what he wants to hear. And disregards the rest.” – Paul Simon, The Boxer. Like it or not, we all probably fall into this listening strategy from time to time. We turn off our critical thinking skills and listen, intently, only for those things that reinforce positions we already hold. We…

Listening As Strategy – Not Listening

Not listening is one of the most common and valuable listening strategies. Not listening, or “selective hearing” is the most basic of all listening skills. It is how we’re able to focus on the person we’re sitting with in a crowded restaurant, even though multiple conversations are taking place around us. We filter out what…

A Quick Look At Lockify

Shiny objects still have the power to steal my focus. This morning I received an email inviting me to a private beta for Lockify.com and I couldn’t resist giving it a try. It’s a simple service. It does one thing – encrypts messages. In doing so, it allows you to send sensitive information in a…

It’s Good To Visualize Things

Stumbled on Mentions Map today while waiting to board my flight to Denver > Austin. I think it’s revealing. Sometimes things are clearer from a 50,000 foot perspective. Of course, this is limited by the Twitter API. It can only look back so far, but it’s an interesting snapshot of of

There Is A Difference Between Different And Differentiation

Last friday during a long drive to lunch, a debate around QR codes waged on Twitter. I couldn’t join in the midst of the fray, since I value my life a whole heck of a lot more than I do QR codes. But when I got to a place where I could read the string…

The Elephant In The Social Media Marketing For Real Estate Room

“When you avoid talking about what isn’t working, you’re also avoiding what will fix it.”  via Time to Kill the Elephants by Tamsen McMahon I like Mike Ferry right now. Yes, I’m aware that some are bashing Mike Ferry for his comments during the smackdown debate between Ferry and Matthew Ferrara at the Coldwell Banker Generation Blue…

Has Twitter Really Changed How WE Communicate?

5 ways Twitter changed how we communicate:  1: Made a fast flow of information faster. 2:Removed the celebrity filter 3: Created “thought leaders” 4: Strengthened the “second screen” 5: (Over)simplified the conversation via CNN.com. This leaves me wondering who the “we” they refer to really is. As we celebrate Twitter’s 5th birthday, and I approach my…

The Implications Of Curated Search with Dan Green And Gahlord Dewald

Before I went to bed last night, I sent this message out on Twitter. respres Jeff Turner New Facebook Patent: the Huge Implications of Curated Search http://bit.ly/hLGnhL (@gahlord have you seen this?) I was hoping it would find Gahlord Dewald fresh and rested and ready to dig in. My plan worked. I got up at 4:15am…

Values Are The Dark Matter Of Human Relationships

We can learn a lot about life from science. I have what I would call a “casual interest” in science, especially quantum physics and chaos theory. I’m not even close to be conversant with anyone that’s really studying these topics, but I enjoy them. So I dabble. A little over a year ago, I was…

We Can’t Control The Moment

Being in the moment is not about control. It’s about giving up control. One of my dearest friends, Ines Hegedus-Garcia, left this comment on my Lessons From A Miraculous Sunrise post. She said, “Sometimes what we think are distractions are actually growth possibilities and there’s a reason those are placed in your way. I prefer not…

Never Wrestle With A Pig

“Never wrestle with a pig – you’ll both get dirty, and the pig will love it” – English Proverb I value diversity. I value diversity of all kinds. And I value diversity of thought above all other forms of diversity. I can’t learn anything from someone who is exactly like me. Not one thing. Ideas…

Choose Harder Things

I’m done with the gym. I’m canceling my membership. A few months ago, Chris Johnson wrote an insightful post about being intense. In it he said this, “We know the real magic happens not with “presence” but with intensity.  Focus.  White hot burn.  Go to the gym.  Spend an hour or more on some elliptical machine….

Better Conversations – Jack Daniels

If markets are conversations, then better conversations equal better marketing. My apologies to Doc Searles and Hugh McLeod, who have both already created some really smart conversations around this topic. But I got one of my Tennessee Squire letters today and it brought a major smile to my face. Jack Daniels has been having a…

Time Provides Its Own Transparency

People reveal who they are. It just happens. One of the battle cries of the social media movement has been, “transparency!” We’ve been encouraged to “be transparent” in our online communication in order to gain the trust of our networks. It’s generally good advice, as far as it goes. Of course it doesn’t go far…

Listening As Strategy – Slides

As is the case with most of my presentation slides, they don’t necessarily make a ton of sense without the sound associated with them. I use slides as concept placeholders, predominantly. I want them to be visually interesting and compliment what’s being said. So, posting them here is less about conveying the message of the…

Focus

Is hard. For me. Somewhere around 4:30 PM yesterday afternoon I lost my focus. And I mean I completely lost it. I found myself on a skype call with great intentions of adding value and then, bam! Focus gone. Totally. My laptop was in my lap, and so was my iPhone. Multiple windows were open…

Pay Attention To Your True Brand

Would you like to know what happens when you shift your focus from your true brand to the words and images that simply represent it? Watch what is happening with the recent lawsuit brought by The Lones Group against The Real Estate Zebra. I won’t go into the details of the lawsuit here. Others have…

Social Is A Mindset

The companies that have been successful in integrating social resources into their business strategy have done so because they have also understood that the mindset of their business needed to align with the culture of conversation that defines what the social space is all about.

Listening To Learn – Numbers Can Be Deceiving

One of my goals in capturing the data from the #sab11 twitter stream was to get a feel for who was moving the conversation, but I was also interested in how much my presentation impacted the twitter stream.

Listening As Strategy – A Snippet

I was honored to be asked to deliver one of the keynote presentations at CRS Sell-A-Bration in Orlando, Florida this past week. My presentation title was, “Listening As Strategy.”

Lessons From A Miraculous Sunrise

I missed the perfect view of a miraculous sunrise yesterday morning. Or at least I thought I had. Sometimes the miracle of a sunrise is what it teaches you.

Your Values Are Your True Brand: Part 2

Yesterday, I talked about the first four values that came from the mentoring and values consulting process. Today I’m sharing values 5-9. As a reminder, the most important thing learned in this process is that I don’t have to try to live my values. I always live my values. Everyone does. What we don’t do is admit to…

Your Values Are Your True Brand: Part 1

Yesterday I wrote about the importance of choosing a mentor who shared your core values and several people commented on their ongoing quest to define their own core values. It’s an important quest, because our values are our true brand. This is true for companies as well as individuals. My quest took many years and…

Find A Mentor Who Shares Your Core Values

You’re not as smart as you think you are, trust me. And You Are Not Going To Get Any Smarter By Yourself. There are few realizations as important as this one in our lives – that we need someone else’s help. Recognizing this fact is often the difference between stagnancy and growth, mediocrity and excellence,…

Have We Really Lost Control?

I’m going to spend the first week of the new year away from this beast, hike, workout, disconnect, and see if I can’t find a way to moderation.

Fourtrace: A Call To Think Before You Share

Fourtrace is a research project in “Advanced topics in Computer Networking” at University of California, Santa Barbara. Our goal is to find out if it’s possible to predict where a user is at a given time.

Let’s Give Tweeted A Try

In reviewing some of the information from the Orange County Wordcamp today, this plugin jumped out at me. It’s from the gang at WPVibe and it’s called Tweeted. It inserts a single tweet into your Wordpress posts.

How To Approach REBarcamp

This was my kickoff presentation at REBarcamp Denver.

8 Ideas To Help You Leverage Social Media

My 10 minute brain dump at Inman Real Estate Connect.

Video Hosting Sites

There are almost as many video hosting sites as there are social networks. Each site has it’s own unique qualities and benefits. Here are a few more places I’ve posted videos.

Live Video Broadcasting

There are a growing number of places that give you the ability to stream video live. I’m sure this list will grow as technology improves and more people join the growing throngs of live video webcasters. Here is a list of the sites I’ve given a shot.

Too Many Social Networks

You can only participate proactively and effectively in a small number of social networks, two or three at best. At least that’s my personal opinion. You can, of course, set up a virtual presence anywhere and everywhere. But should you? That’s a different question entirely.

iPhone 2.0 Enabled Sites

A slew of new sites are making their way to the surface that take advantage of the iPhones application architecture and updated features, including GPS-based geotagging of photos. This list will grow rapidly, I fear.

Social Planning Sites

My decision to NOT use the following sites isn’t an indication that they aren’t as good as Upcoming. It’s purely random.

Social Messaging

A growing list of “other” social messaging sites I use besides Twitter.

Places I May Never Visit Again

This is the internet equivalent of, “This tastes horrible. Try it.”
